Hitachi ZX890: Specifications and Used-Buyer Guide

Hitachi ZX890: Specifications and Used-Buyer Guide
On this page
For a quarry or mining project, first define the material, truck fleet, required output and access constraints. The Hitachi ZX890 is a large excavator family whose exact specifications depend on series, market and attachment. This guide distinguishes manufacturer reference figures from the evidence required for a used unit.
Choose the machine by verified production requirements and total delivered cost.

1. The Class: 85 Tons Is a Production Decision

The ZX890 sits in the heavy production tier:
  • Smaller than a 120-ton shovel
  • Larger than a 45-ton “big site” excavator
  • Assess suitability for the actual truck size and loading height
  • Estimate output using measured cycle times, material density and truck availability
For the European ZX890LCH/LCR-7, listed operating weight is 84,600–87,500 kg. Hitachi lists a 3.5-5 m³ bucket range for that configuration family. These figures do not identify the bucket or packed shipping weight of an individual used unit.

2. Engine: Identify the Series and Rating

The Japanese ZX890H/LCH-7 specification lists an Isuzu 6WG1 engine with 15.681 L displacement. Confirm the engine plate, emissions label and matching regional documentation for the machine offered.
  • Rated power: 382 kW at 1,800 rpm (Japanese -7 specification, ISO 14396)
  • Torque: verify against the matching engine specification
  • Fuel tank: 1,110 L in the Japanese -7 specification; tank size alone does not determine shift duration
  • Cooling: inspect the fitted radiators, fan and coolant condition
Check local parts support using the engine model and serial number before purchase. Do not assume a specific component is stocked locally or that every ZX890 uses identical controls.

3. Hydraulics and Attachment-Dependent Forces

Hydraulic system and front attachment checks:
  • Identify the fitted pump assemblies and repair history
  • Verify main-pump flow against the series-specific manualVerify pilot pressure and control response using the correct procedure
  • Relief settings: use the matching service specification
  • Bucket digging force, selected -7G short-arm configuration at power boost:472 kN
  • Arm digging force, same selected configuration:394 kN
  • Swing: inspect backlash, braking and hot loaded response
These force figures are attachment-dependent catalogue values, not test results for the used machine being offered.

4. Quarry Production Planning

Build a site-specific loading plan:
  • Estimate bucket payload from heaped capacity, fill factor and measured loose-material density
  • Check the loading target against the truck's rated payload and safe loading position
  • Record passes per truck during a representative test
  • Measure digging, swing, discharge, return and truck waiting separately
Compare measured output per shift with fuel, maintenance, transport and project costs. No fixed cycle time, profit rate or payback period is promised.
Selected ZX890-7G brochure working ranges:
  • Maximum digging depth is 7.14 m with the 7.1 m BE boom / 2.95 m BE arm, or 8.87 m with the 8.4 m H boom / 3.7 m H arm
  • Max reach: 12.34–14.10 m
  • Dump height: 8.13–9.08 m
These are configuration-specific brochure ranges. Confirm the installed boom and arm and use the correct lifting chart; do not use an excavator to tow equipment without an approved procedure.

5. Undercarriage Inspection and Ground Conditions

Record the actual undercarriage configuration:
  • Shoe width and grouser type: match to ground and OEM configuration
  • Rollers and idlers: inspect measurements, leaks and alignment
  • Track chain: check wear limits and replacement records
  • Frame: inspect cracks, repairs and attachment points
  • Ground pressure: confirm the exact configuration and site bearing capacity
A wide shoe does not automatically improve durability in every rock application. Use qualified measurements to budget repairs; a stated remaining-life percentage is not an inspection or a guarantee.

6. Cab: The Operator Decides Your Cycle Time

Operator comfort, visibility and controls affect safe daily operation.
Check the fitted equipment rather than assuming options:
  • Wide glass, low front pillar, rear-view camera ready
  • Seat suspension, belt, noise and cab condition
  • Control pattern and operator compatibility
  • Monitor function, warnings and available maintenance records
  • Camera equipment and visibility on the actual unit
  • Protective certification, climate control and emergency exits
Assess the cab during a representative working test. No productivity advantage over another machine is assumed from cab design alone.

7. Buying a Used ZX890 for Export

Compare inspected used and new alternatives on total project cost:
  • Purchase price and available repair reserve
  • Recorded service history and documented major-component replacements
  • No fixed remaining engine life can be inferred from model or hours alone
  • Obtain a local parts and repair quotation for the fitted pumps
  • Approve dismantling, packed dimensions and shipping method with the carrier
Keep unit identity, inspection findings and agreed preparation scope in the written purchase record.

8. Inspection Scope to Agree Before Purchase

The following is a proposed inspection checklist, not a claim that these tests have been completed on every stock machine:
  1. Cold start: record smoke, sound, warnings and coolant or oil leaks
  2. Pump flow and relief pressure: agree qualified tests and record conditions
  3. Boom and arm: inspect repairs; agree specialist non-destructive testing if needed
  4. Swing bearing: measure play under the applicable procedure
  5. Final drives: inspect leaks and consider oil analysis
  6. UC measurement — link pitch elongation, roller seal, sprocket wear
  7. Bucket and ground-engaging tools: inspect capacity, wear and compatibility
  8. Cab: test monitor, camera, climate control and safety systems
  9. Hydraulics: inspect leaks, oil condition and hot loaded performance
  10. Documents — year, hour meter photo, engine plate, export docs
Confirm which records, videos and measurements will be supplied for the selected serial number before agreeing payment.

9. Who Should Buy It

  • Quarry owners loading 30–60 t trucks
  • Mine contractors on iron ore / coal / bauxite
  • Aggregate producers feeding jaw/cone crushers
  • Government infra doing dam, port, river diversion
  • Equipment traders assessing local demand, compliance and repair support
Compare the proposed machine with your production target, site access and transport plan. A larger machine is not automatically the most economical choice.

10. Data to Confirm for the Exact Machine

  • Model: record the full series and regional designation
  • Year: confirm from the plate and available manufacturer records
  • Hours: record the dated meter reading and supporting history
  • Weight: confirm installed equipment and measured packed weight
  • Engine: confirm model, serial number and rated power
  • Bucket: identify installed capacity and material suitability
  • Digging force: use the matching boom and arm specification
  • Undercarriage: retain measurements and a repair estimate
  • Price: on request / FOB China

11. The Bottom Line

The ZX890 can be considered for heavy quarry or mining work when its configuration matches the production system. Confirm condition, local service, transport and a serial-specific quotation; this article does not promise stock, remaining life or payback.
