In the Caterpillar excavator family, the D Series is often remembered as the last generation of "mechanical-feeling" Cats before the screen-heavy Next Gen machines arrived. Within that lineage, the Cat 340D / 340D L occupies a very specific and very valuable slot: it is the 38-tonne (roughly 40-short-ton) excavator that gives you almost 349-class stability with 336-class transportability, powered by the legendary Cat C9 ACERT and wrapped in a heavy-duty high-wide undercarriage that quarry bosses and mine superintendents still ask for by name.
It is not the biggest Cat. It is not the newest. But in 2026, a clean used 340D L is still one of the smartest buys in the 35–42 tonne bracket—especially for contractors in Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, Latin America and the Pacific who need a machine that loads rock all day, runs a breaker without sweating, and can be repaired with spanners instead of a laptop.

Where the 340D sits in the Cat lineup

Caterpillar's large excavator ladder in the D era looked like this:
  • 336D / 336D2 – ~36 t, C9 194–205 kW, 1.6–1.9 m³ bucket
  • 340D / 340D L38.1–39.2 t, C9 ACERT 200–209 kW net, 1.88–2.41 m³ bucket
  • 345D L – ~45 t, C13, bigger front
  • 349D L – 46–48 t, C13 ACERT 283 kW, 2.6–3.2 m³ bucket
The 340D was Cat's answer to a simple customer complaint: "The 336 is a little light for our blasted granite, but the 349 is too expensive to feed and too heavy to truck between quarries." The 340D L took the 336's footprint, widened it with the HDHW (Heavy Duty High Wide) carbody, kept the C9 instead of jumping to the C13, and let it carry a 2.1 m³ rock bucket all shift long.

Engine and hydraulics: the C9 ACERT sweet spot

The heart of the 340D is the Cat C9 with ACERT technology—an 8.8 L inline-six, 112 mm bore × 149 mm stroke, turbocharged with air-to-air aftercooling and the ACERT combustion package.
  • Gross power (SAE J1995): 213 kW / 290 hp
  • Net power (ISO 9249, 1,800 rpm): 200 kW / 272 hp
  • Net power (ISO 14396, 1,800 rpm): 209 kW / 285 hp
Owners love the C9 because it is the last Cat excavator engine in this size class that you can rebuild without touching a common-rail pressure sensor jungle. Injectors are mechanical-ish HEUI/ACERT style, the turbo is a single fixed or wastegated unit, and the cooling package is oversized. In Tier 3 / Tier 4 Interim export form, there is no DEF, no DPF regeneration clock, no urea pump to freeze in a Mongolian winter or clog in a Sudanese dust storm.
Hydraulics are the classic Cat two-pump load-sensing system:
  • Main pump flow: 2 × 280 L/min = 560 L/min total
  • Normal working pressure: 350 bar
  • Heavy lift pressure: 360 bar
  • Swing circuit: 280 bar, travel circuit: 350 bar

Translation for the operator: the 340D lifts a full 2.1 m³ of wet clay and still swings crisply; it does not "breathe" like a smaller machine overloaded with a big bucket.

Those digits put the 340D L in the "loads a 30-tonne dump truck in 3–4 passes" territory. In a granite quarry with 35-t rigid trucks, it is the perfect loading tool—fast enough to keep cycle times under 35 seconds, heavy enough that the truck driver does not wait.

Why it still earns its keep in hard applications

The 340D L was built for three job types above all:
1. Aggregate quarries and hard rock loading
Blasted limestone, granite, basalt—anything that would chew a 336's undercarriage in a season. The HDHW carbody raises ground clearance, spreads ground pressure, and lets the machine stand square while the bucket bites at the face. The C9 has the torque curve to pull through sticky clay and the hydraulic flow to crowd the bucket into rock without stalling.
2. Open-pit mine support and overburden
Not a 349 replacement for primary production, but ideal for cleaning benches, digging drainage ditches, feeding a mobile crusher, or running a 2.5-t breaker on oversize. The 38-t weight class absorbs breaker recoil far better than a 30-tonner.
3. Large civil and infrastructure
Dam cores, highway cuts, port reclamation, power-plant foundations. The 7.96 m max depth covers deep utility trenches and sheet-pile extraction work; the 11.7 m reach lets it cast spoil well clear of the edge.
Cat's own competitive field tests in Asian quarries (pitting a 340D LME with a 2.69 m³ bucket against a larger competitive 40-tonner) showed the 340D delivered almost identical productivity (−2%) but 14–16% better fuel efficiency in Eco / High-Horsepower modes. For a fleet manager counting litres per tonne moved, that gap is the difference between profit and break-even.

340D vs the neighbours

  • vs Cat 336D2: The 336 is ~2 tonnes lighter, slightly tighter in confined sites, a bit cheaper used. But the 340D L carries a bigger bucket, stands more stable on a rock pile, and holds resale better in quarry markets. If you load trucks for a living, the 340 wins.
  • vs Cat 349D L: The 349 jumps to C13 (283 kW), 46 t, 3.2 m³ bucket. It out-produces the 340 by 10–18% in the same rock, but burns 20–25% more fuel and costs 35–45% more used. For 30–35 t trucks, the 340 is correctly sized; the 349 is overkill unless you run 45-t trucks.
  • vs Komatsu PC360: The PC360 is 33–36 t, 180–202 kW. Lighter on its feet, slightly better on fuel in some reports, but the Cat 340D L beats it on stability, bucket size and "presence" on a African/Middle Eastern tender where the client specifies Cat.
  • vs LiuGong 940 / SANY SY365: Cheaper new, closing the gap on warranty. But a 2012 340D L with 9,000 h still outsells a 2020 domestic 36-tonner on resale, and the C9 parts tree is deeper in Nairobi, Almaty or Lima than any Chinese brand's yet.

Buying a used 340D L without the painful surprises

Because the 340D is a favourite conversion base (long-reach kits, demolition fronts, dredging arms), the used market is full of both original gems and Frankenstein units. Before you wire money:
  • Confirm the variant: 340D (standard carbody) vs 340D L (long undercarriage, HDHW). Most export buyers want the L.
  • Check serial prefix and build market (US, JP, CN, EU). Emissions tag must match the year.
  • C9 health: compression test, blow-by check, coolant sample for liner scale, turbo shaft play. A tired C9 rebuild is 18–25k USD; a blown one is 40k.
  • Hydraulics: warm the oil, hold boom + stick out, watch for >5 cm/min drift. Listen for pump whine above 1,800 rpm. Both original Cat pumps should still be in place—swapped no-name pumps kill resale.
  • Structure: boom root welds, stick behind bucket cylinder, carbody cross-member cracks. Quarry machines hide weld repairs under fresh paint.
  • Undercarriage: 600 mm pads wear faster than 700 mm in rock. Measure link pitch stretch; a full UC rebuild on a 39-t Cat is 25–35k USD.
  • Hour meter vs wear: seat foam, joystick rubber, glass scratches, track pin polish, paint fade on ROPS posts. Inconsistent = rolled-back.
A genuine 340D L, 2010–2013 build, 7,000–11,000 h, original pumps, 60%+ undercarriage, no structural weld, will still invoice 55–70% of a 2026 336 Next-Gen equivalent in most export yards—and earn it back in 12–18 months of quarry loading.

The bottom line

The Cat 340D L never tried to be the flagship. It tried to be the machine a quarry manager buys when the 336 is too small and the 349 is too rich. With 209 kW net from a C9 ACERT that mechanics trust, 560 L/min of honest hydraulic flow, a 620 L fuel tank, 2.1 m³ of bite, and a high-wide undercarriage that laughs at blasted rock, it hits the rare triangle: heavy enough, frugal enough, repairable enough.
Sixteen years after the last units rolled off the line, the 340D L is still loading trucks in Oman, digging laterite in Ghana, cleaning benches in Kazakhstan, and fetching real money on every used-equipment lot that knows what it is. Not the newest Cat. Not the biggest. Just the one that shows up, fills the truck, and runs the night shift without a software update.
