Used Excavator Import Inspection Checklist: What Overseas Buyers Should Confirm Before Purchase
Importing a used excavator can be a cost-effective way to expand a construction fleet, but buyers should inspect carefully before payment and shipping. A good machine can reduce project cost, while a poorly checked machine can create delays, repair costs, and customs problems. This checklist is designed for overseas buyers who source used excavators from China and want a clear review process.

1. Confirm the Exact Machine Identity
Start with the basics: brand, model, year, serial number, machine hours, engine model, operating weight, bucket size, and current location. Ask for clear photos of the nameplate and serial number. The model shown in photos, quotation, invoice, and export documents should be consistent.
2. Review Engine Condition
The engine is one of the most important inspection points. Ask for startup video, idle video, acceleration video, and close-up photos of the engine compartment. Look for abnormal smoke, oil leakage, coolant leakage, difficult starting, unusual noise, damaged hoses, and poor maintenance signs.
3. Check the Hydraulic System
Hydraulic performance affects digging power, lifting ability, swing speed, and overall productivity. Buyers should request working videos that show boom, arm, bucket, swing, travel, and combined movements. Check whether movements are smooth and whether there are visible leaks around pumps, cylinders, hoses, and control valves.

4. Inspect Undercarriage and Structure
The undercarriage can be expensive to repair. Ask for detailed photos of track shoes, chains, rollers, idlers, sprockets, and track frame. Also check boom, arm, bucket, pins, bushings, weld areas, counterweight, covers, and cab frame for cracks, repairs, or heavy impact damage.
5. Ask for a Complete Working Video
A short video is not enough for serious buying decisions. A useful inspection video should show cold start, engine sound, hydraulic operation, walking forward and backward, swing, digging movement, cabin display, machine hours, and a full outside walkaround. If possible, ask for the video to be recorded on the same day as inspection.

6. Confirm Documents and Export Details
Before payment, confirm invoice details, packing information, shipping method, destination port, expected delivery time, and export documents. Depending on your country, you may need bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, inspection certificate, or other customs documents.
7. Compare Total Landed Cost, Not Only Machine Price
The lowest machine price is not always the best deal. Overseas buyers should compare machine price, inland transport, loading cost, ocean freight, insurance, destination port charges, customs duty, tax, local transport, and possible repair cost. A cleaner machine with reliable support may be more valuable than a cheaper machine with uncertain condition.
8. Work With a Supplier Who Provides Clear Follow-Up
A reliable supplier should provide photos, videos, machine details, export support, and clear communication before shipment. Buyers should avoid vague descriptions, missing documents, or machines that cannot be inspected properly.
