But ask any used-equipment dealer, any African quarry superintendent, any Middle East road contractor, any Southeast Asian rental-yard owner what machine they keep coming back to — and the answer is often the same: Komatsu PC200-8.
It is not the newest. It is not the most digital. It does not have a touchscreen the size of a tablet or a subscription-based telematics lock. What it has is something more valuable in the field: a Japanese-built SAA6D107E-1 engine that mechanics understand, a CLSS hydraulic system that has been refined over millions of hours, and a structural toughness that lets it outlive two owners and still pull a 1.0 m³ bucket through laterite at 6,600 mm below grade.

Buying a used PC200-8 without the trap

The machine is so common that the used market is 50% gems and 50% repaints with rolled-back meters. Before wiring money:
  • Confirm engine: SAA6D107E-1, not a swapped 6BG1 or Cummins. Check injection pump serial vs chassis serial.
  • Pumps: both Komatsu brand, no whine above 1,800 rpm, no overheating after 30 min trenching.
