The Komatsu PC360: The 36-Ton Excavator That Owns the Quarry, the Mine and the Road Job

If the 20-ton class is the daily driver of the excavation world, the 35–37 ton class is where serious production starts. And in that class, few machines have the global reputation of the Komatsu PC360. From iron ore pits in Western Australia to limestone quarries in the Middle East, from highway cuts in Southeast Asia to foundation pits in West Africa, the PC360 shows up, loads hard, and refuses to quit. It isn’t the biggest machine on site. It is, however, one of the most balanced: heavy enough to run a 1.8 m³ rock bucket all day, light enough to truck between jobs without a permit nightmare, and proven enough that used-equipment buyers in three continents bid on it without blinking.

The engine and hydraulics: Komatsu does it all in-house
The PC360 runs the Komatsu SAA6D114E series—a 6-cylinder, 8.27 L turbocharged diesel. Depending on the generation (PC360-7, PC360LC-8, PC360-8M0, or the newer -11M0), rated power lands between 180 kW (2,420 rpm tier) and 202 kW (2,750 rpm in the latest SE spec). The key point for owners is that Komatsu builds the engine, the hydraulic pumps, the valves and the final drives. That vertical integration means the HydrauMind closed-center load-sensing system actually talks to the engine the way it was designed to. Main pump flow is around 535 L/min, system pressure 37.3 MPa, swing circuit 27.9 MPa. The result operators feel: boom-up and arm-in happen together without the engine bogging, and the machine sips fuel relative to its size—owners in the field report 15–22 L/h in normal loading, not the 30+ L/h people fear from a 36-tonner.

Those digits translate into real work: in a quarry with 30-ton dump trucks, a PC360 with a 1.8 m³ bucket loads in 4–5 passes. In a trenching job, it reaches 7.3 m down without a long-arm kit. On a rock site, the reinforced boom and 3185 mm heavy-duty arm take breaker shock loads that would crack a 30-tonner’s frontend in a season.

Why it fits hard environments
The PC360 was born for the kind of work that ruins soft machines. The -8M2 and SE variants come with 16 mm side plates on the boom, 19 mm bottom wear plates on the bucket, corner tooth adapters, and quarry-spec linkage pins. The SAA6D114E engine has a dual-stage self-cleaning air filter, an aftercooler, and no fragile urea/DPF drama on the Tier 3 / Tier 4 Interim builds—huge in Africa, Iraq, Kazakhstan and Papua New Guinea, where fuel quality is questionable and the nearest dealer is a day’s drive away.
Operators stay in it because the cab is a ROPS/FOPS shell with air suspension seat, low 70-ish dB(A) noise, decent A/C, and a layout where the right hand never leaves the joystick. On a 12-hour mine shift, that matters more than a fancy touchscreen.

PC360 vs the usual suspects
- vs Cat 336: The Cat has more brand pull in North America and slightly stronger resale in some lanes, but the Komatsu matches it on breakout force, beats it on fuel in most owner reports, and the SAA6D114E is cheaper to rebuild than a C9 ACERT. Undercarriage life is comparable; hydraulic smoothness goes to Komatsu.
- vs Hitachi ZX350 / EX360: Hitachi shares genes with Komatsu in feel, but parts inter-changeability and global dealer depth favor Komatsu in emerging markets.
- vs LiuGong 936 / SANY SY365: The Chinese 36-tonners are cheaper new and closing the gap fast, but the PC360 still wins on 10-year structural survival rate and secondary-market price. A clean PC360-8 with 8,000 hours still fetches 45–55% of a new PC360-11M0; a same-age domestic 36-tonner often sits at 30–38%.
- vs Volvo EC360: Volvo cab is plusher, but Volvo’s fuel burn and undercarriage cost in rocky work push fleet managers back to Komatsu.

Where it actually works best
- Quarry and aggregate: Blasted rock, loading 25–40 t trucks, running a hydraulic breaker on secondary breaking. The SE-spec bucket and reinforced linkage are purpose-built here.
- Open-pit mining / overburden stripping: 24-hour cycles, dust, uneven floor—PC360LC-8 and -11M0 with 700 mm pads shine.
- Large earthmoving and highway: Deep cuts, borrow pit digging, dam cores. 7.38 m depth covers most road jobs without a long front.
- Site prep and foundations: Urban basement pits, power plant grading, port expansion. Tight enough to live behind a hoarding, heavy enough to move spoil fast.
- Light demolition: With a shear or grapple, the 36-ton weight class is the sweet spot before you jump to a purpose-built demolition excavator.
Buying a used PC360 without getting burned
The PC360 is so common that the market is full of both gems and traps. Check the generation first—PC360-7 (180 kW, mechanical-ish management) is cheaper and simpler; PC360LC-8 / 8M0 (187 kW, CLSS HydrauMind) is the export-market sweetheart; PC360-11M0 (202 kW, Tier 4 Final / China Stage IV) is the modern one with DEF. Then look at:
- Serial plate vs emissions tag vs actual engine—mismatches are common on rebuilt units
- Boom/arm for weld repairs; check inside the stick behind the bucket cylinder
- Undercarriage: measure link pitch stretch, roller flange, idler play
- Hydraulic: warm the machine, hold boom and arm out, watch for drop >5 cm/min
- Pump whine, swing brake leak, final drive oil milky = budget 8–15k USD in fixes
- Hour meter vs seat wear, vs glass scratches, vs track pin polish—inconsistent = rolled-back
A genuine PC360LC-8 with 7,000–10,000 h, original pumps, 60–70% undercarriage, and clean hydraulics is still a money-printing asset in 2026. It will out-earn a mystery-brand 36-tonner by the second month.
The bottom line
The Komatsu PC360 never tried to be the smartest machine in the yard. It tried to be the one still running when the smart ones are on a low-loader waiting for a software patch. 180–202 kW, 1.6–1.9 m³ bucket, 7.38 m dig depth, 33–36 t of balanced steel, and a hydraulic system that has been refined across six generations. For a quarry owner in Oman, a contractor in Indonesia, a miner in Zambia, or a rental yard in Texas, that combination is why the PC360 stays on the shortlist.
