Ultra-large mining equipment delivers outstanding performance, as a single unit can replace multiple small and medium-sized machines. It effectively shortens construction cycles and reduces equipment management and maintenance costs, making it an inevitable choice for mines to expand production.
Taking ultra-large mining excavators as an example, statistics from QYResearch show that the global market sales of ultra-large hydraulic mining excavators are expected to reach 49.5 billion yuan by 2031, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.3% from 2025 to 2031.
Surging market demand is prompting major manufacturers to ramp up the development of ultra-large tonnage products. Since the start of 2026, manufacturers have launched a string of new products, including multiple new-generation ultra-large mining trucks and numerous ultra-large mining excavators that have rolled off the production line and been delivered to customers.

Caterpillar
New Generation Cat 6040 Mining Excavator Launched
Caterpillar has recently unveiled its new-generation Cat 6040 hydraulic mining excavator. This 400-tonne model is equipped with two Cat C32 engines, generating a total power output ranging from 1,516 kW to 1,554 kW, designed to enhance efficient and continuous operation in large-scale mines.
Nils Feddern, Senior Product Advisor for Caterpillar Hydraulic Mining Excavators, stated: "Customers are looking for ways to move more material without increasing fuel consumption or downtime." The new Cat 6040 features variable on-demand hydraulic flow, which lowers excess heat, saves energy and extends component service life. This optimized hydraulic system improves operational efficiency by up to 15%. The dual Cat C32B engines produce 1,550 kW of power and support single-engine operation. The machine complies with the US EPA Tier 4 Final, EU Stage V and China Non-road Stage III emission standards.
To meet diverse mining requirements, the Cat 6040 is available with standard buckets and various configurations up to 38.4 cubic meters. An optional 1,400 kW electric drive system enables zero-emission operation.
Furthermore, Caterpillar sets a target design life of at least 60,000 operating hours for the Cat 6040. The machine is 2.25% heavier than its predecessor, fitted with heavy-duty fixed-axis rollers and idlers to eliminate grease consumption. The single-line grease injection system reduces the risk of pipeline rupture. It can fully load a 147-tonne Cat 785 truck in four passes and fill a 327-tonne Cat 796 AC truck in eight passes.

Komatsu Global Mining (KGM) in Germany announced the global release of the PC9000-12, the largest and most innovative hydraulic mining excavator in Komatsu’s product lineup. Following its successful launch in Canada, the PC9000-12 is now available worldwide through Komatsu’s global dealer network.
The PC9000-12 is engineered to boost productivity and efficiency and reduce cost per tonne, while delivering reliable power and performance that customers trust. Dennis Chmielewski, Vice President of Mining at SMS Equipment, Komatsu’s dealer in Canada, commented: "We are thrilled to officially bring this game-changing machine to all of Canada. The PC9000-12 is set to redefine operational efficiency and elevate productivity to new heights in the harshest mining sites."
Built to withstand the toughest mining environments, the PC9000-12 can be configured with Tier 4 diesel engines, non-emission-controlled diesel engines or electric drive systems. This high flexibility allows mining companies to select configurations in line with regulatory requirements and on-site conditions.
As the largest model in the PC series, it features the largest bucket capacity, longest working radius and maximum digging force across the range. These advantages help shorten cycle times, raise output and cut production costs. Two configurations are offered globally: front shovel and back shovel, fitted with 46-cubic-meter and 49-cubic-meter buckets respectively.
Designed for smart mines, the PC9000-12 caters to the needs of future mining operations. It enables efficient side-by-side loading and is fully compatible and integrated with Komatsu’s FrontRunner autonomous haulage system.

XCMG
7 Units of 300-Tonne Class Excavators Delivered Globally in Batches
Earlier this year, seven XCMG XE3000 large mining excavators were installed, commissioned and officially put into operation at a major open-pit mine in Africa.
This batch delivery marks another major milestone in XCMG’s global expansion of high-end mining equipment and solid progress for Chinese manufacturing in the global mining sector.
As a flagship 300-tonne class mining excavator from XCMG, the XE3000 features excellent adaptability and reliable performance, perfectly matching the demands of high-intensity continuous mining at local mines. Equipped with a 1,193 kW high-power engine and advanced hydraulic system, it delivers robust power and precise control. Its standard back shovel has a bucket capacity of 15 cubic meters, with a single bucket load exceeding 30 tonnes, which greatly shortens loading and hauling cycles and improves overall efficiency and economic benefits.
The XE3000 also delivers outstanding durability and operational stability amid the local high-temperature and high-humidity working conditions. Key hydraulic components including pumps, valves, motors and reducers are sourced from top global brands for superior reliability. Core structural parts such as the chassis, slewing platform and working equipment adopt optimized equal-strength design, improving stress distribution and overall structural durability. Thanks to continuous upgrades in design and details, the excavator runs steadily for a long time with an operational availability rate of over 90%, becoming a core workhorse for continuous and efficient local mining.
At the end of February, another batch of XCMG 300-tonne class mining excavators was dispatched to mining sites around the world, showcasing XCMG’s formidable strength in open-pit mining equipment.
Liebherr
New-Generation 100-Tonne Class Mining Excavator Enters Mass Production
Liebherr Mining has launched the R 9100 Generation 8 (G8), the latest addition to its 100-tonne class mining excavator range. Following successful field validation of pre-production units in Indonesia, the R 9100 G8 is now available for sale. It will replace the previous-generation R 9100 G6 after entering mass production in Q2 2026 for back shovel versions and Q3 2026 for front shovel versions.
As part of the validation process, Liebherr Mining partnered with PT Madhani Talatah Nusantara to test the R 9100 G8 under real working conditions.
From September 2024 to December 2025, the excavator operated an average of 411 hours per month with an availability rate of 92%, exceeding on-site expectations. A productivity test conducted in September 2025 recorded a production rate of 771.2 cubic meters (1,589 tonnes) per hour and a fuel consumption of 85.7 liters per hour, achieving a fuel efficiency ratio of 9 bank cubic meters per liter.
Fuel consumption accounts for approximately 40% of the operating costs of 100-tonne class excavators. To help customers minimize fuel expenses, the R 9100 G8 is equipped with Liebherr Power Efficiency (LPE), an in-house engine and hydraulic management system that reduces fuel consumption while maintaining high productivity.
Compared with the R 9100 G6, the new model cuts fuel consumption by 20% and improves fuel efficiency by 30%, saving up to 100,000 liters of fuel annually.
In addition, the machine is compatible with Liebherr’s IoMine technology suite, supporting the transition to smarter and more efficient mine operations. Pre-production validation for the US Tier 4 / EU Stage V compliant version is scheduled to start in 2027.

In March, the Kunshan plant completed the production of 1,200 large mining excavators, successfully fulfilling its phased production target.
Shantui
300-Tonne Class Excavator Expected to Roll Off Line This Year
According to Shantui Construction Machinery, the company has continued to expand its mining equipment lineup after completing its excavator product chain in 2024. Its 100-tonne and 125-tonne excavators are mature products available on the market, while the 200-tonne model is undergoing field validation with thousands of operating hours accumulated. The 300-tonne excavator is currently in the trial production stage and is expected to be completed and launched for market validation within this year. The company is also actively developing excavators of larger tonnages.
LiuGong
9200F Ultra-Large Excavator Delivered for Operation
In March, the LiuGong 9200F ultra-large excavator was delivered to work on actual job sites.
The 9200F is the largest excavator ever developed by LiuGong. It also features the most components, the highest manufacturing difficulty and the widest technical coverage among all LiuGong excavator products.
The project team built a customized simulation system for key components. Combined with multi-working-condition modeling, boundary check, failure simulation and multidisciplinary analysis, the structural mechanical performance was greatly enhanced on the premise of complete functions, enabling accurate prediction for engineering implementation and reserving space for further optimization. A full matrix strain monitoring system collects overall stress and dynamic load data to guarantee the durability of core structural parts.
In terms of power and hydraulic systems, the 9200F is fitted with an efficient power package and intelligent hydraulic system to deliver sustained powerful performance. Equipped with LiuGong’s proprietary controller and full electronic control system, it realizes dynamic intelligent matching among the engine, main pump, main valve and working equipment loads, keeping the engine running within the optimal fuel consumption range at all times.
