Just Landed: SANY SY235C — The 24-Tonne "Right-Sized" Excavator That Pays for Itself in Earthwork
On this page
Fresh off the transport trailer and sitting in our yard this week: a SANY SY235C crawler excavator, clean original paint, low hours, ready for inspection and export. In a market flooded with 20-tonne 215s and 30-tonne 305s, the SY235C is the machine contractors actually spec when they need more bite than a 320-class Cat but don’t want to feed a 330-class fuel bill. It is the 23.5–25.2 t sweet spot — heavy enough for quarry support and highway cuts, light enough to truck on a standard low-bed, and cheap enough on the used market to print money on a 12-month payback.

Why the SY235C, and why now

The SY235C is one of SANY’s most exported mid-size models. It has run for over a decade across Africa, the Gulf, Central Asia, Indonesia and Latin America with almost zero mystery around parts: Isuzu 6BG1 or 4HK1X engine, Kawasaki/KYB hydraulics, standard SANY undercarriage. No proprietary black box, no DEF drama on the Tier 3 builds, no waiting three weeks for a sensor from a single source.
For a contractor in Lagos, Dar es Salaam, Almaty or Manila, that means one thing: when it breaks, a local workshop can fix it with parts off the shelf.

Engine and hydraulics — Japanese heart, Chinese value

Most export-spec SY235C units run the Isuzu 6BG1 six-cylinder turbo diesel:
  • Rated power 128.5 kW (174 hp) at 2,100 rpm
  • Displacement 6.494 L, peak torque ~610 N·m
  • Mechanical-ish injection, tolerant of variable diesel quality, rebuildable without a laptop
Tier 4i / Stage V builds swap to the Isuzu 4HK1X (132–140 kW) or Cummins QSB6.7 (145 kW) depending on destination, but the Tier 3 6BG1 version is still the king of the used export lane because it is dead simple.
Hydraulics are twin-variable-piston load-sensing with SANY’s positive-flow DOMCS controller:
  • Total pump flow 504 L/min (2 × 252 L/min)
  • System pressure 34.3 MPa, swing 25.5 MPa
  • Bucket breakout 175 kN, arm force 122 kN — numbers that let a 1.2 m³ rock bucket crowd into clay and still swing clean
The controller matches engine RPM to pump demand in real time, so the auto-decel and eco modes shave 5–10% fuel versus an older constant-speed machine. Owners in the field report 18–24 L/h in normal trenching and loading — right where a 24-tonne class machine should sit.

The numbers that decide a purchase

  • Operating weight: 24,200 kg (std) – 25,300 kg (Tier 4i) – 25,215 kg (long-reach variant)
  • Bucket: 1.1 m³ std, 1.2 m³ common, 1.4 m³ option
  • Max dig depth: 6,785 mm (standard arm); long-reach version reaches 18 m horizontally
  • Ground-level reach: 10,150 mm
  • Dump height: 6,725 mm
  • Travel: 5.5 / 3.5 km/h, swing 11 rpm, gradeability 70% (35°)
  • Fuel tank: 340 L, hydraulic tank 239 L — full shift plus overtime, no midday refuel
  • Undercarriage: 600 mm triple-grouser std, 700 mm option, ~47.6 kPa ground pressure
That geometry covers almost every general civils job: 6.7 m trench depth handles deep utilities and foundation pits; 1.2 m³ bucket loads a 10–15 t dump truck in 3–4 passes; 175 kN breakout pulls through laterite and frozen subsoil without bogging.

Where it actually earns the money

  1. Road and highway works — side drains, embankment lifts, crusher feed, pipe trenches. The 235 sits between the 215 (too small for production loading) and the 265 (too heavy for tight shoulders).
  2. Quarry support — not a primary blast loader (that’s a 330/365 job), but perfect for face cleanup, oversize handling with a breaker, and loading 10-t artics.
  3. Foundation and commercial basements — 6.7 m depth covers most urban basement specs without a long front.
  4. Canal, irrigation and river works — stable on soft bank with 700 mm pads, long reach keeps the carbody off the edge.
  5. Rental fleets — operators from a Cat 320 or Komatsu PC200 step into it with zero learning curve; resale into the same export lanes is fast.

SY235C vs the usual suspects

  • vs Cat 320E / 320D2: Cat has stronger brand pull and slightly better undercarriage life in pure rock. But the SY235C is 1.5–2 t heavier, carries a 1.2 m³ bucket vs 1.0 m³, and costs 40–55% less used. For owner-operators, the math wins.
  • vs Komatsu PC210: The PC210 is 21–22 t, lighter on the front. The SANY out-bites it in hard ground and undercuts it on price by a wide margin.
  • vs SANY SY215: The 215 is the volume seller and slightly tighter in town. But the 235’s extra 2.5 t and bigger bucket make it the better production choice on open sites — the reason many fleets run both.
  • vs LiuGong 922 / XCMG XE245: Comparable spec, comparable price. SANY wins on global dealer spread and resale depth in Africa/SEA.

What we checked on this unit

Because the SY235C is everywhere in the used trade, the difference between a gem and a trap is in the details. On this freshly arrived unit:
  • Original Isuzu 6BG1, no overhaul, no blow-by, no coolant trace in the oil
  • Both main pumps original, no whine at 2,100 rpm, no cylinder drift on warm holding test
  • Boom root and stick behind bucket cylinder checked — zero weld repair, original factory paint intact
  • Undercarriage measured: rollers tight, links within pitch, 600 mm shoes ~60–70% life remaining
  • Hour meter consistent with seat foam, joystick rubbers, glass and track-pin polish
  • Cab A/C blows cold, monitor self-diagnoses clean, no active fault codes
  • Comes with standard 1.2 m³ digging bucket; breaker lines and quick-hitch ready on request

The bottom line

The SANY SY235C is not the biggest machine on the yard. It is not the newest. But in the 24-tonne bracket it is one of the hardest to beat on cost-per-tonne-moved. 128.5 kW of Japanese diesel, 175 kN of bucket force, 6.7 m of reach, 340 L of fuel endurance, and a used price that lets a contractor recover the outlay in a single season of quarry or road work.
This one is in the yard now, pressure-washed, inspected, and ready for a WhatsApp video call or a physical visit. We can load it into a 40HQ or roll it onto a RoRo with the rest of your order — CIF Lagos, Mombasa, Dar, Karachi, Jakarta or Callao, your call.
Low hour. Original paint. 24 tonnes that work like 26. DM for hour meter, photos and quote. 🟡🚜
