CAT 320D Main Pump vs Pilot Hydraulic System

Understand working-oil supply and control commands before ordering a replacement pump.

Two different jobs in the same hydraulic system

In the inspected conventional 320D hydraulic material, the main pumps supply the working oil used by the implements and motors. The pilot system carries control commands, and pump-control arrangements regulate the pump output. A control problem can therefore change movement even when the fault is not a worn main pump. This explanation is not a pressure specification and should not be transferred to a different excavator generation without checking its system.

A simplified command and power path

  1. Operator commandThe requested function starts at the controls.
  2. Pilot / control pathThe command is passed to the relevant control arrangement.
  3. Main pump + control valveWorking oil is supplied and directed to the function.
  4. Actuator + returnThe cylinder or motor responds; oil returns through its circuit.

This is a functional overview, not a service schematic. The pump reference explicitly treats the 320D-329D pump/control group separately from the 330D/336D group. Similar-looking machines do not justify treating their control components or settings as interchangeable.

Why the distinction helps troubleshooting

Observation Question to resolve
Several functions respond poorly Is the shared command/supply path affected, and what is the engine doing?
One function has a specific problem What differs in that function’s command, valve, actuator and return path?
A pump was changed but the symptom remains Was the original cause established, and was the replacement matched and tested?

A technician may need serial-specific pressure, flow, control and engine checks to distinguish these paths. No single working-video impression proves a pump is healthy or worn. Record the symptom and the installed pump/control identity before ordering parts.
