Travel-system diagnostic lab
An excavator that pulls to one side does not prove a failed travel motor. Trace energy from track resistance through hydraulic supply, motor, brake and planetary gears before setting a repair or purchase price.
First equalize track tension and undercarriage resistance; then test straight travel, high/low speed, turning, slope response, temperature and oil. If the symptom remains, a technician should compare pressure and case drain before condemning the motor or final drive. Choose the unit only when cause and worst-case repair cost are known.

Record results before cleaning, adjustment, oil change or repair. Each step removes possible causes and preserves a fair comparison between machines.

Check track tension, packed mud, seized or flat rollers, damaged links, shoe interference and unequal chain resistance.
Check oil level, leakage at motor, hoses, cover and duo-cone area, loose plugs, impact damage and service date. Sample both sides separately.
Use level firm ground, equal track tension, the same engine mode and a visible distance marker. Repeat forward and reverse before judging drift.
Confirm both tracks shift speed, start together, counter-rotate and pivot without abnormal delay, chatter, brake drag or sudden loss.
After the machine is warm, repeat travel under a safe comparable load. Watch whether one side stalls, rolls back, loses speed or needs more engine command.
After equal work, measure the same points on both housings, motor lines and nearby rollers with the same device and timing.
A qualified technician should compare travel pressure, brake release, motor case drain and supply before opening the gearbox. Record settings and test conditions.

No. Unequal track tension, seized rollers, hydraulic supply, swivel-joint leakage, brake release, travel motor wear and planetary damage can create similar symptoms. Test the undercarriage and both travel circuits before condemning one component. Choose repair only after pressure, case-drain, temperature, oil and mechanical evidence point to the same cause.
You can screen them, but you cannot complete the diagnosis. Straight travel, counter-rotation, slope response, noise, leaks, oil level and left-to-right temperature reveal risk; gauges and case-drain measurement separate hydraulic supply from internal leakage. Use field screening to reject obvious failures, then require a technician test before paying a premium.
Visible flakes, chips or magnetic debris are a red flag for gear, bearing or planetary wear; fine paste alone still needs interpretation against oil age and service history. Compare both sides and inspect the drain plug under controlled conditions. Choose another machine or price a teardown when debris is significant or paired with noise, heat or backlash.
A repeatable left-to-right temperature difference after the same travel cycle can indicate drag, low oil, bearing or gear friction, brake-release trouble, internal leakage or different track resistance. Temperature is a locator, not a diagnosis. Repeat the test on level ground, correct track tension and then confirm with hydraulic and oil checks before choosing the machine.
Not without disclosure. Fresh oil can remove evidence that a buyer needs, while neglected oil can also create false conclusions. Ask when and why it was changed, retain the old-oil or sample record when possible, and compare service evidence with noise, heat and travel performance. Choose the unit whose maintenance is traceable rather than cosmetically reset.
Reject or demand a teardown allowance when the machine cannot complete a repeatable travel test, has metal debris, severe noise, missing oil, major housing leakage, one-sided overheating or a seller who refuses pressure and case-drain checks after a failed screen.
