Conditions that require explanation before payment

  • The controller or telematics reading is materially higher than the display.
  • A later dated service record shows fewer hours than an earlier record.
  • The serial on an electronic report does not match the machine plate.
  • The meter, monitor or controller was replaced but no before/after record exists.
  • The seller describes hours as confirmed while providing only a dashboard photo.
  • Wear and hot-test condition strongly contradict a low-hour claim.

A defensible verification sequence

    Photograph machine serial, engine serial, full model/suffix, display and controller labels.

    Retrieve readings

    Collect display, controller/ECM, OEM telematics and the latest dated service reading.

    Build chronology

    Order every reading by date. A valid sequence should not decrease unless a documented component was replaced.

    Test consistency

    Compare cold start, hot performance, controls, joints and measured undercarriage with the claimed history.

Hour verification questions

Can excavator hours be verified from the dashboard alone?

No. A dashboard reading is a claim. Use a serial-linked controller, OEM telematics or dealer source plus dated records.

Does worn paint prove high hours?

No. Paint reflects exposure and repair. It cannot establish exact hours and may be older or newer than the components below it.

What difference is acceptable?

There is no universal percentage for every machine. Small differences may reflect update timing or idle/runtime definitions; material conflicts require source and chronology review.

What if the meter was replaced?

Record old reading, replacement date, new starting reading, part or work order and current reading. Without that chain, total hours remain unverified.

Can undercarriage wear estimate hours?

It can estimate current component wear, not machine life. Soil, travel distance, shoe width, tension and prior replacement change the result.

Should a low-hour claim increase the price?

Only after the hours and condition are independently supported. Price should still reflect hot performance, repair needs, configuration and delivered cost.
